4.) Land Vermin

prayingmantisWhat is vermin?

 –noun, plural ver⋅min.

noxious, objectionable, or disgusting animals collectively, esp. those of small size that appear commonly and are difficult to control, as flies, lice, bedbugs, cockroaches, mice, and rats.

Vermin is basically everything else aside from what we have discussed thus far :)

The one vermin that is permissible by all madhaahib — even Hanafis! — is……..

3.) Birds

Allah praises bird meat in the Qur’an like He praises no other meat. It is the food of the people of Jannah — “And they shall have the meat of any bird they desire.” (see 56:21)

The vast majority of birds are halaal.

There are a few simple rules which let us know which birds are prohibited:

1.) Birds which have talons are forbidden

The Prophet sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam forbade every predator with fangs and every bird with talons.

The Malikis, however, only consider birds with talons to be makrooh.

2.) The mustakhbath rule applies to birds: birds that eat dead meat such as vultures, kites and buzzards.

For the Malikis, however, these birds are permissible.

3.) The Prophet sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam forbade two types of birds: the shrike (Surad) and the hoopoe (hudhud). (Abu Dawood)

(The first picture is the hoopoe/hudhud and the second is the shrike/Surad).

By unanimous consensus, all fish are halaal.

In fact, Allah praises fish in the Qur’aan in a way that He has praised no other animal. (more…)

Section 1: Permissible and Impermissible Animals

1.) Land Animals

The scholars divided these animals into four categories.

landanimal_chart

The domesticated animals would be cattle, farm animals, etc. There are some general rules of thumb to follow for land animals:

1. Domesticated animals must be ritually slaughtered (dhabh)

2. Non predatory animals, by and large, may be hunted

3. Predatory animals, by and large, are haraam

Animals allowed by unanimous consensus are: (more…)

The general rule in regards to animals is: everything is permitted unless an evidence says it is haraam.

The Etiquettes of Drinking

The etiquettes for eating would also include the etiquettes of drinking, but there are a few additional things to note for drinking:

1.) Drinking in three sips

Anas reported that Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) breathed three times (outside the vessel) in the course of a drink and said: “It is more thirst- quenching, healthier and more wholesome.” [Muslim, 23/5030]

Does this mean that you should drink your entire glass in three sips? (more…)

 The Etiquettes of Food

The etiquettes of eating do not have to do with haraam and halaal, rather they have to do with what is mustahab (preferred or liked) and what is makruh (what is disliked; it is not a sin, but should be avoided.)

1.) Scholars say that aying the basmalah (bismillah) is waajib

Once, the Prophet sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam was sitting in the house of his Umm Salamah, when her son [the Prophet's stepson, probably of 6 or 7 years] ‘Umar ibn Abi Salamah ran in, and started eating hastily from all over the plate. The Prophet sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam gently said to him, “O ghulaam! Mention Allah’s name, and eat with your right hand, and eat from that which is close to you.” [al Bukhaari & Muslim in their sahihs]

redchopsticksThe very fact that the Prophet sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam is interrupting him as he is eating shows that he is saying something very important. The Prophet sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam gave him a very short, sweet lecture, addressing him in an endearing way, saying “O ghulam!”, which is like saying “my son.”

The Prophet sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “Shaytaan considers it halaal to eat food over which bismillah has not been read.” Therefore, when you forget to say bismillah, your food not only suffices for you, but another entity as well.

The shaykh did not mention this hadith in class, but I thought it was kind of funny (and relevant…): (more…)

PreciousProvisionsBismillah.

I just took an AlMaghrib class after about 3 years!Alhamdulillah. And anyone who knows me well knows I love AlMaghrib. so that was pretty much 3 years of torture.

Just this past weekend, I took the Precious Provisions class with Shaykh Yasir Qadhi. I loooved this class, and I must say that I think the Shaykh’s teaching style has improved mui much since the last class I took with him in Hosna – Light upon Light (2005).

As per a request from a dear friend :) — I will be putting up my notes from that class inshaAllah. For all of the Muslimah Mommies, I sincerely hope Allah makes it easy for you to seek knowledge. (I am eternally in debt to my sweet hubby for watching the kids the entire weekend.)

Just a little disclaimer – these notes are not like my transcripts on lectures. Although I’m usually quite a meticulous note taker, I was a bit distracted in this class thinking about my children :) I will look up the ahaadith and ayahs and cite them where I can inshaAllah. As always - please let me know of my mistakes, it is much appreciated :)

Precious Provisions

taught by Shaykh Yasir Qadhi

Bismillah. One of the first things that Allah did after He created Adam ‘alayhis salaam was tell him:

“O Adam! Verily, this is an enemy to you and to your wife. So let him not get you both out of Paradise, so that you be distressed in misery. Verily, you have (a promise from Us) that you will never be hungry therein nor naked.” (Taha, 117-8)

But shaytaan enticed them to disobey Allah. And with what did shaytaan entice? To eat from the haraam. And what was the consequence when Adam fell prey to the sin? Immediately – nakedness. Food and clothing. From the beginning of mankind.

From this story, we learn that Allah’s blessings diminish when you sin.

From the very beginning, since the creation of our father Adam, shaytaan’s plan was to get us to eat haraam and expose our nakedness. Not only does this class discuss the very genesis of man, but it deals with practical fiqh of a daily matter.

Of what use is a religion that tells you how to behave on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday but not the rest of the days? A sign of a true religion is that it tells us how to live our every day lives.

There is a hadith in which a Jewish man mocked the religion fo Islam, saying: “Has your Prophet taught you everything, even how to [and here the man used a very vulgar word, but we shall say] defecate?” And to this Salman AlFarsi replied, “Yes. Our Prophet even taught us how to go to the bathroom.” He wasn’t embarassed at all. There is nothing to embarassed of; this is the sign of a true religion.*

We thank Allah who taught us how to eat and also what to do when the food has digested and has to come out.

InshaAllah we will begin with the Etiquettes of Food.

*I searched for this hadith but couldn’t find it. The closest thing I could find were some hadith in Sahih Muslim, see Muslim 2/504 and 505

Who Are My Mahrams? August 11, 2009

Who are your mahrams – the men you cannot marry/have sexual relations with and do not have to observe hijaab in front of ?

My husband seems to be quite lost these day on exactly who a woman’s mahrams are, so I thought I’d do a little reading for him. (Yay! One thing I actually might know more about than him! :)  My source was primarily my Fiqh of Love notes (taught by Shaykh Yaser Birjas), but I double-checked with Islam Q&A to make sure I didn’t have discrepancies. Please correct me, someone, if you happen to find any mistakes!
